Osamu Tezuka?

*edit* Osamu Tezuka was the first in japan to make a cartoon. "anime" is simply short for "animation" anywho. manga wasn't what it was today, but picture-stories in japan date way back into the samurai era and evolved from there.

also, "manga anime" is an oxymoron. anime=cartoon. manga=comic. completely different things.

Uh, i don't think 'Anime' itself has an actual self-confessed or appointed founder, the whole idea of animation can be separated into 2 parts:

Traditional Animation - Such as flip-books.

Computer Animation - Aka, classics such as Disney or Lupin III

Anime itself came about through Japanese filmakers playing with the western style of animation (i think this was in the 1970's or 60's) where they developed their own, recognisable style.

It was when anime's such as Gundam came out that Anime became mainstream (Guessing this was around 1982).

It wasn't until the amazing film, Akira, was created in 1988, that Anime was recognised world-wide.

Then we go into the 1990's where Anime's such as DragonBall and Pokemon, not to mention Sailor Moon, hit international screens.

The predicate of Anime is Manga; a paper form comic.

Osamu Tezuka, known world-wide as the 'Grandfather of Manga' or more apropriatley in Japan as the 'God of Manga', is thought to be the origins of manga, (1952 or 3..either one) creating such fantastically simple classics as Astro Boy and Black Jack.

Osamu Tezuka is also the inventor of Anime's distinctive 'Large eyes' =D
