Jean-Georges Prosper
Prosper, Jean-Georges (b. 1933). Poet. Born on Mauritius, he left to attend the Sorbonne where he read for both a first degree and a doctorate. He became president of the Association des Écrivains de Langue Francaise and, from Paris, advised on French education on Mauritius. He is author of the seminal Histoire de la littérature mauricienne de langue française (1978) and the words of the Mauritian national anthem. Always offering a plurality of readings, Prosper's poems have become increasingly religious, as the title of his later collection, Les Saignées du Saigneur (1983), suggests.
