There are many good Indian foods. It all depends on what type you want. South Indian food is much more spicy than North Indian food. Some of my favorites are biryani, which is chicken and rice with spicy masalas and curry, chana masala, which is spicy chickpeas with curry on top, chicken tika masala, which is chicken with masala, or spices on them, and I have many more. There are also various snacks and deserts. My favorite snack is Pani Puri, which is like spices in water and you dip hard puris, or hard, fried bread in it. It is very good! My favorite dessert is gulab jamun, which is deep fried balls of dough made with flour and milk curds which are then smothered with a sugary syrup. A formal vegetarian meal of Uttar Pradesh consists ofchapatis, rotis (flatbread) and/orpuris (deep fried puffed flatbreads), daal(thick lentil soup), rice (boiled white rice), vegetable curries (one or more of dry/fried and semi-liquid curries each), curd, pickles, papad (thin spicy crackers) and a variety of sweets ( gulab jamuns, rasmalai, rabri, jalebi, laddoos of varying varieties, pethas, kheer, gujhiys and many others). It is normally served in metal dishes and traditionally eaten without the use of cutlery, sitting on the bare floor. When a large gathering is to be feasted in a traditional manner, food may also be served on disposable, flat platters (called 'pattal'), which are made by intertwining broad leaves of certain trees.Samosas and pakoras are among the favourite snacks.

A non-vegetarian meal consists of many varieties of meat- or rice-preparations that have evolved in the region, and are now nationally and internationally known as the Moghlaicuisine; some of these are: kebab, kofta, korma, keema, pulao, biryani, parathas(plain or stuffed), halwa, firnietc. In addition, a selection from the above vegetarian dishes may be present among the food spread. Traditionally, food is served in metal-ware or ceramic crockery, eaten directly with bare hands or (sometimes) with spoons, sitting on the ground covered with a flooring material like cloth-sheet or carpet.

Many Hindus are strict vegetarians-- this means they don't even eat egg. So this would make most cakes and pastries and pies out of bounds. There are some Hindus on the other hand, who eat eggs or who eat eggs when present in cakes.

However, to be on the safe side, when entertaining, do ask your guest if they're okay with an egg-based dessert. If not, you can always whip up something like fruit salad and custard. You can also find lots of recipes online for eggless desserts.

If you are buying dessert from a store, do check with the store about the ingredients, or just head to a vegan store. In case there is some ambiguity, it might be best if you just whip up something easy like a fruit bowl, which is always appreciated!
