Somaliland has numerous natural resources such as uranium, iron ore, tin, gypsum, bauxite, copper, salt, natural gas, likely oil reserves. On top of that Somaliland has 740km Coastline and rich marine resources. So yes Somaliland is very rich if these resources are tapped into.

Benito Mussolini, the Italian fascist dictator, used the Italian Army to invade Ethiopia starting on October 3, 1935. The Italians invaded from their colonies in Eritrea & Italian Somaliland. The Ethiopians were defeated by May 1936, and Ethiopia was annexed into the new Italian colony of East Africa.

Italy was striving to create colonies in the Mediterranean area in North Africa. In 1935 it attacked Abysinnia. Then it attacked British Somaliland and eventually merged Ethiopia, Eritrea and Italian Somaliland into one state; the Italian East Africa (AOI - Africa Orientale Italiana).

Somalia did not fight for their independance at all- before Somalia became a country it was two different protectorates- A British protectorate called British Somaliland (established in 1884-87), and an Italin Protectorate called Italian Somaliland ( established in 1889-90). Italy promised after World War II that in 10 years they would make Italin somaliland an independent republic. Somalia became a fully independent republic in 1960. When Italin Somaliland was gaining independance it merged with British somaliland making them both independent republics under the new name of Somalia.
