The parent company for Budweiser is Anheuser-Busch Companies, Inc. Their location in the United States is in St. Louis, MO although they have locations throughout the world. Due to recent mergers, the company is mainly owned by InBev, a Belgium company. Anheuser-Busch produces other beers like Busch and Michelob. Something similar happened with Miller. Due to recent mergers, the company is owned by a South African company who in turn also has merged with Molson Coors. Our domestic beers are no longer locally owned.

Budweiser is owned by Anheuser-Busch which is headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri. Anheuser-Busch however is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Anheuser-Busch InBev which is Belgian owned. The beer itself is brewed in various locations, including the U.S.

1 answer

I think the answer you want may be Anheuser-Busch/In-Bev.

In the U.S. the distribution of beer is legally sperate from the manufacture of beer. While AB-InBev is often heavily invested in the small (legally) independant distributers in each market, because of the law, they must be operated independantly.

Bud Light is made through a brewing process that involves malting barley, mashing it with hot water to extract sugars, boiling the mixture with hops to add bitterness and aroma, fermenting the liquid with yeast to produce alcohol, and finally conditioning and packaging the beer. The specific recipe and techniques used by Anheuser-Busch InBev to make Bud Light are proprietary and closely guarded secrets.

Over the summer a Belgian company, InBev, purchased Anheuser-Busch, the company that makes Budweiser. Budweiser is no longer an American owned brand. This is good for the stockholders, as the stock value went up but the brand took a hit among very patriotic beer-drinkers who prefer to drink beer brewed by American owned companies.

Malted barley is the main ingredient in pretty much all beers, even some gluten free beers use extremely low amounts of refined barley malt extract.

If you want a beer specifically not made with any barley at all, I would recommend reading labels and calling breweries. You'll probably have to avoid all mass market breweries, though I believe AB-InBev does make a sorghum lager named Redbridge (no idea if it's totally barley free).

Taste is a subjective thing. The type of beer you like will help determine what you think the best American beer is. If you go by sales volume Bud Light is the best American beer, it is certainly the best selling American beer.

If you are going by flavor profile and hype surrounding a beer then you will come up with a different answer.

Beer Advocate (One of the top two beer rating sites on the internet) shows Pliny the Elder by Russian River brewing (California), an American Imperial IPA, as being the top rated American beer.

Rate Beer (the other of the top two beer rating sites on the internet) shows Oak Aged Dark Lord by Three Floyds Brewing (Indiana), an Imperial Stout as being the top rated American beer.
