Hicksville is a hamlet and census-designated place in Nassau County, New York, United States. The population was 41,260 at the 2000 census. Hicksville may well have been named after Elias Hicks the great Quaker preacher whose daughter married her cousin, Valentine Hicks. Others hold Hicksville was named after Valentine Hicks, the second president of the Long Island Rail Road.[1] Hicksville was once home to potato farms and pickle works[2].

Geography

Hicksville is located at 40°45′48″N, 73°31′24″W (40.763355, -73.523231)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 17.7 km² (6.8 mi²). 17.6 km² (6.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.15% is water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 41,260 people, 13,710 households, and 10,844 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 2,339.3/km² (6,057.2/mi²). There were 13,912 housing units at an average density of 788.8/km² (2,042.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 84.56% White, 1.36% African American, 0.11% Native American, 9.04% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 3.05% from other races, and 1.84% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 9.26% of the population.

There were 13,710 households, of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 64.5% were married couples living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 20.9% were non-families. 16.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.00 and the average family size was 3.36.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 22.5% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 30.6% from 25 to 44, 23.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.0 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $97,703, and the median income for a family was $102,505. Males had a median income of $50,126 versus $36,278 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $26,741. About 2.4% of families and 3.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.9% of those under age 18 and 4.3% of those age 65 or over.

Hicksville is the hometown of author Gary D. Schmidt.
