List, Herbert (1903-75), German photographer. In 1923, after studying art and literature, List joined the firm of his father, a Hamburg coffee importer, and travelled extensively in Central and South America on business. Friendship with Andreas Feininger deepened his interest in photography, which he took up professionally after emigrating in 1936. In 1937 he travelled to Greece with George Hoyningen-Huene, and there cultivated a bold, contrasty style and a fascination with surreal juxtapositions of ruins and everyday objects. He also made experimental double exposures and heroically stylized male nudes. After the German invasion of Greece he returned to Germany and joined the army. From 1945 he lived mainly in Munich, producing independent series (for example Memento 1945 about Munich's ruins), and photo-essays for numerous illustrated papers. In the 1950s he became one of Germany's leading portraitists.

His austere, classically-posed black-and-white compositions, particularly of male nudes, taken in Italy and Greece have been highly formative for modern photography, with contemporary fashion photographers like Herb Ritts being clearly influenced by List's style.
