A hankering is a craving, a longing, a yearning, a desire, a hunger or thirst. In modern US English, its use is often associated with a rustic idiom (i.e. used by or acting out an uncultured rural character, a hillbilly, a hick or a hayseed). "I've got me a hankering to lock lips with a purty little woman."

The deep south (Alabama, Mississippi) has a rich heritage with their own unique slang phrases such as: Get a hankering for something, get in a heap of trouble, eat some hominy and grits.

Speaking as someone with a neutered male dog who has recently decided that he and my spayed female dog should be...er...more than friends...boys will be boys.
If there are male dogs around with easy access (kept in the same fenced in yard or house), they're going to know she's a female and get a hankering to "show their affection" once in a while. If she's not in heat, though, which she won't be if she's spayed, she won't be attracting random strays from the neighborhood.

Here's a quote....
Religion is based, I think, primarily and mainly upon fear. It is partly the terror of the unknown and partly, as I have said, the wish to feel that you have a kind of elder brother who will stand by you in all your troubles and disputes. […] A good world needs knowledge, kindliness, and courage; it does not need a regretful hankering after the past or a fettering of the free intelligence by the words uttered long ago by ignorant men.

The 6 Week Body Makeover is a very popular diet plan that originated as an infomercial product. The plan starts by analyzing your body type and metabolism and then suggests a food and exercise plan. Many people have had great results from this diet, but some of the claims the commercial makes, such as the ability to eat more than you ever have and still lose weight, can be misleading. Try a personalized diet based on common sense first, and if you are still hankering for a more commercial solution, talk to your doctor about giving this plan a try.

In the U.K. plum pudding is also called Christmas pudding since it is served with Christmas dinner. Believe it or not, it contains NO PLUMS! Plums used to be the term used for raisins. The pudding has a lot of dried fruit in it held together by egg and suet and sometimes moistened by molasses and flavored with cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, ginger and other spices. The pudding is aged for a month or longer -- that's because they drench it in alcohol. My grandma used to say it was too drunk to spoil. She would wrap it well, put it in the pantry and leave it there for an entire year, or until she got the hankering for some "pud".

Dark clouds are smouldering into red,
While down the craters morning burns
The dying soldier shifts his head
To watch the glory that returns;
He lifts his fingers toward the skies
Where holy brightness breaks in flame;
Radiance reflected in his eyes,
And on his lips a whispered name.
You'd think, to hear some people talk,
That lads go West with sobs and curses,
And sullen faces white as chalk,
Hankering for wreaths and tombs and hearses.
But they've been taught the way to do it
Like Christian soldiers; not with haste
And shuddering groans; but passing through it
With due regard for decent taste.

Back in 1942, a woman named Cita was craving for something sweet. Her boyfriend at the time, was a rice field farmer named Kulas. One day, Cita had a hankering for freshly cooked rice. So Kulas cooked some by his farm but instead of adding salt to taste, he put in brown sugar. Kulas also left the pot for a longer period of time than usual and had too much water. The resulting product was a sweet, pasty rice cake like substance that Kulas found appetizing. He brought this to Cita which she loved and decided to give her friends in the barrio. They named it after themselves, Kulas and Cita. Kutsinta.
