It has to do with the way the day a date can have change from one year to the next. 52 weeks is 364 days, so every year the day goes forward one day: today (26 Aug) last year (2014) was a Tuesday and this year (2015) it is a Wednesday; so you'd expect next year it to be a Thursday. However, it is a Friday next year as next year is a leap year - the extra day of 29 Feb causes this jump. It is the effect of this jumping a day that causes a date to miss certain days. The sequence of days a date can have (across the years) follows a cyclic pattern of 7 blocks with 4 days in each block:

{Mo, Tu, We, Th}, {Sa, Su, Mo, Tu}, {Th, Fr, Sa, Su}, {Tu, We, Th, Fr}, {Su, Mo, Tu, We}, {Fr, Sa, Su, Mo}, {We, Th, Fr, Sa}

Examining those blocks it can be seen that every individual day follows a pattern of being in 2 blocks, misses 2 blocks, is in 2 blocks and then misses 1 block before the sequence repeats. Depending upon where in the sequence of those blocks the day for a date (in a given year) appears, when that day is repeated on that date in future years can be determined..

In the 1940s and 1950s there were 5 leap years (1940, 1944, 1948, 1952, 1956) that affect the sequence of days 25 Aug can have. As 1940 was a leap year, the date 25 Aug had in 1940 is the first day of a block; and in 1940 25 Aug was a Sunday. Thus the sequence of days it will follow is:

{Su, Mo, Tu, We}, {Fr, Sa, Su, Mo}, {We, Th, Fr, Sa}, {Mo, Tu, We, Th}, {Sa, Su, Mo, Tu}, {Th, Fr, Sa, Su}, {Tu, We, Th, Fr}

Thus for the 1940s the days will be: {Su, Mo, Tu, We}, {Fr, Sa, Su, Mo}, {We, Th, ...};

and for 1950s the sequence will be: {..., Fr, Sa}, {Mo, Tu, We, Th}, {Sa, Su, Mo, Tu}.

(I've left the days in the block groupings to highlight the jumped days due to leap years.) You should also note that Saturday and Tuesday (and Friday) also only occurred once in the 1940s, and Sunday and Wednesday (and Thursday) only once in the 1950s. In this particular 20 day extract from the sequence of possible days, Thursday and Friday both appear only once in each 10 day half.

For more information on the sequence of days for a given date over the year, look at the question:

"How do the days of a date in the Gregorian calendar change through the years" here on Answers (copy and paste that into the question search box, or see the [Add] Related Questions).
