German Development Institute

The German Development Institute (Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik, or DIE) sees itself as the think tank for German development policy. It builds bridges between theory and practice and works within international research networks.

Since its establishment in 1964, the DIE has based its work on the interplay between research, consultancy and training. These three areas complement each other and are the factors responsible for the DIE’s distinctive profile. The DIE'’s institutional independence is guaranteed by the institute’s founding statute.

The DIE is a non-profit company with limited liability. It is located in the former German capital of Bonn. The budget from which it meets its expenses is funded from public sources. The partners are the Federal Republic of Germany and the Federal State of North Rhine-Westphalia. The Institute's articles of association guarantee independence for its scientific and academic activities. Its activities, working methods and organization are governed by a statute.
