Gas is a city in Allen County, Kansas,
United States. The population was 556 at the 2000 census.
Geography
Gas is located at 37°55′26″N, 95°20′46″W (37.923851,
-95.346168)1.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area
of 2.0 km² (0.8 mi²), all land.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there were 556 people, 217 households, and 167 families residing in the
city. The population density was 282.5/km² (735.0/mi²). There were 234 housing units
at an average density of 118.9/km² (309.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 94.60% White, 0.18% African American, 1.26% Native American, 0.72% Asian, 0.18% from other races, and 3.06% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.16% of the population.
There were 217 households out of which 34.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.9% were married couples living together, 7.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.6% were
non-families. 20.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or
older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the city the population was spread out with 26.6% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 29.0% from 25 to 44, 23.0% from
45 to 64, and 12.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 104.4 males.
For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $35,804, and the median
income for a family was $38,942. Males had a median income of $25,104 versus $18,500 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,012. About 9.4% of families and 12.4% of the population were
below the poverty line, including 11.9% of those under age 18 and 10.9% of those age
65 or over.
