As I understand it, a freewheeling engine, such as the 2.3 liter Ford is an overhead cam engine that will not crash the valves if the timing belt breaks.
A 350 Chevy uses a timing chain since the cam is in the block. If the timing chain breaks on that, you're out of luck.

In no way is it detrimental to a car, whereas overrun (when the wheels are driving the gearbox and engine) causes unnecessary wear on the transmission. Freewheeling will increase brake wear, but brakes are much easier and cheaper to replace than gearboxes and differentials.
Any vehicle that has to rely on engine braking, has an inadequate braking system.

You can save fuel because the engine then goes back to idle. But by disconnecting the engine from the wheels (freewheeling) you don't have so much control over your car. You can also save fuel by turning off the engine and freewheeling down a hill, but if you have power brakes they won't have any power. Could be a problem.

No.. Short distances are fine.. Indefinite distances are a NO NO. The transmission and transaxle are designed to be lubricated properly with the engine runing and the gears meshed..
Freewheeling the drive train will prevent lubrication from covering all the moveable parts with enough design fluid pressure to be sufficient.. Also, all external seals require lubrication to stay plyable.. Freewheeling prevents the output shafts from spray-up lubrication and will eventually damage the seal lip due to overheating.. 1. Consider a simple half wave rectifier circuit consisting of an ac source a diode and a series R-L load.
2. now during the positve half cycle of the source current, the diode conducts but it stops conducting when the negative half cycle starts.
3. For an R-L load load current lags the source voltage and tries to flow in the previous direction even when the source voltage has reversed.
4. This action due to the inductance, builds a high voltage across the diode which may exceed its forward breakdown limit and permanently damage it.
5. Thus freewheeling diodes are used to short the load during negative half cycles and hence prevent the voltage breakdown of the semiconductor switches used in the control circuit.

You can certainly (have someone) build a BMX wheel around a fixie hub.
I suppose you could somehow disable the freewheeling action of a regular hub too, but I wouldn't recommend it. Putting back pressure on the pedals on a bike that hasn't a real fixie hub can cause the sprocket to unscrew.

If you mean riding backwards under power, they you'd have to have a wheel custom built around a fixed-wheel hub. Not impossible but it'll cost a bit.
If you simply want a freewheel hub instead of a coaster brake hub, such a bike should be possible to find. At worst , you can have a wheel built around a regular BMX hub which usually are freewheeling.

Alternators have two parts, one is the armature that generates electricity and the other is a voltage regulator. In most cars the typical output for an alternator is 13.2 to 14.4 volts. If their is more or less than this being produced, the voltage regulator may be faulty or the bushes may be worn.
another issue that some alternators have is the failure of the bearings inside the alternator leading to noisy running or the bearings inside the freewheeling pulley fitted to more and more modern alternators. these can often be replaced independently.

This is actually called a single phase half converter and it is used to have an adjustable DC output voltage. It is like a bridge rectifier but two of the diodes are replaced with a solid state switch, SCR for example, and there is also a freewheeling diode in parallel with the load. A half converted can have an output voltage that is adjustable from 0.9*E to 0 volts. It does this be adjusting the firing angle of the switches. There is also a full converted and the difference is that it has an output voltage from + 0.9*E to - 0.9*E volts.

Don't really understand your question. A bicycle while freewheeling AKA coasting isn't receiving any energy input from the rider. W/o energy input there's really not much point in calculating efficency.
On a flat surface the bike will simply roll to a stop as air drag, bearing losses, and rolling resistance in the tires slowly use up all of the momentum or kinetic energy that was in the bike + rider at the moment the rider stopped pedalling.
If it's at a downhill slope, then gravity will try to drag the bike forward/down, if the frward vector of gravity is bigger than the bearing losses, rolling resistance etc etc.
On a singl speed bike while pedalling, the freewheel isn't moving WRT the hub, so the issue becomes moot. What you're left with is the efficiency of a chain drive( which is high, 98% or so). And for the whole vehicle you then have to subtract bearing losses, rolling resistance ASO.
If you include the rider you might want to consider the losses in turning food(chemical energy) into kinetic energ(i.e. the bike moving forward). And with that approach stuff like bearing losses aren't even on the chart and can be ignored.

i took a couple of wheel barrow wheels, welded a frame using the front of a bmx bike for the steering. build the engine in. find a riding mower transmission. couple the tranny to the mower motor by a belt and pulleys. leave the belt loose and put a third, freewheeling, pulley to tighten the belt (this will act like a clutch) gear the tranny out put to the rear wheel. my 4.5 horse Murray ran through a 3 speed rider transmission will climb a 30 degree slope in first and easily does 3omph in 3rd which is scary fast. half the fun is figuring out how to build it, have fun

In the event of a cam belt or timing chain failiure
an engine classed as interference wil suffer considerable damage
when the belt/chain fails the valve timing goes out of sync
which causes the valves to contact the pistons,
resulting in bent/broken valves, possible damage to the valve guides located in the cylinder head, and very rarely damage to the pistons.
A non interference engine,also known as a freewheeling or safe engine.
In the event of belt/chain failiure, the valves do not meet the pistons
I:E the engine fails safe
A precautionary compression test should be carried out after belt/chain replacement
to check condition of the valves.

Yes, an airplane can take off from a conveyor belt. The conveyor belt only moves the wheels, not the air around the wings that is necessary for lift. As the airplane moves forward, the wings generate lift to allow the plane to take off as normal.

1: Check that the pin at the back is pushed in (the pin which allows you to put the transmission into "neutral" so you can move it without using the engine). It's right at the back, near the lower right.
2: Check the drive belt; this goes from the bottom of the engine right to the rear axle. If it's too loose, you'll get no movement (and a burning rubber smell, most likely!)

Ok...its gyro-copter to start lol. They differ from helicopters in that they are in "Auto rotation" all the time during flight which means the relative wind blows through the rotor causing lift from the underside. An engine driven pusher propeller is used to push the gyro into the wind, hence causing the main rotor to turn and generate lifting forces. In a helicopter, the engine directly drives the main rotor and the tail rotor. The tail rotor is used to offset the huge torque from the main rotor in the helicopter. The gyro does not need this torque corrector as the main rotor is freewheeling and has a rudder in place of a tail rotor for directional control.
When a helicopter engine fails, it must drop a good distance to have the main rotor pick up enough speed to help flair for a lesser crash impact. The gyro is already in auto rotation and hence needs a much much less drop in altitude to keep up rotor speed for a safe landing.

Depends. If it's a so-called flip-flop hub it will, if it's a fixed-only it won't. Flip-flop hubs have regular freewheel threading on one side, and the special fixed threading the other. But the axle may be too short.

Take the timing cover off, and DO NOT loosen the tensioner pulley, BUT check for alignment of the gears.
Check tension of the belt, on the long side, by twanging it with one finger (putting one finger under the belt in the center of the long side, and pulling lightly out and allowing the belt to vibrate.) if it doesn't twang for 2 to almost 3 seconds after you do this (vibrate for almost 3 seconds, then it's too loose.)
A special tool is normally used to tighten this belt after loosening the large nut holding it.
After adjustment, turn the engine over with the crank nut 3 full revolutions, then recheck belt tension.
The main next thing to check, is the amount of printed ink still remaining on the back side of the belt.
To check the ink: turn the engine over with only the crankshaft pulley bolt, NEVER by the timing gear bolt, until the printed ink comes into view.
The ink is bright white or yellow when the belt is new.
When the ink is 90% gone, then the belt is 90% worn.
This is a freewheeling engine, so if the belt breaks, it will not normally damage the valves.
