To answer this question, I had to do some reaserch for school, and I hope anyone else that is studing Barnabas Bidwell, finds this helpful! Barnabas Bidwell, was a man who immigrated to Canada from the United States. He was considered an "alien" and was rejected all sorts of rights and priviledges, that Canadians were being granted. He just wanted his family to lead a proper life, and he would do anything to make sure that they would be aloud all the prividleges of other families. So, he decided to fight against...the Family Compact. The Family Compact were the "government" back then, made up of wealthy men who were very unfair. The result of this battle that Barnabas Bidwell faught with the Family Compact was the forming of the first governments in a sense. The Family Compact (Conservatives) and what Barnabas Bidwell was fighting for, The Reform Party (Liberals). Hope this helped, and that is why Barnabas Bidwell fought the Family Compact!
