Holi is a great spring festival celebrated across various parts of India. It is also known as the Festival of Colours.

Holi is celebrated in eve of Slaying of demoness Holika by Prahlad (Devotee of Lord Vishnu).

Holi is a festival of colours and it is celebrate only by Indians. It is always celebrated in March. It is a two day festival.

A bonfire is lit on full moon day of Falgun (Phagun) month. This corresponds to March). Rituals vary from place to place. The bonfire is the manifestation of the celestial burning of Kamadev (God of Romance and Love) by Siva. Kamadev is sent by gods to break Siva's penance so that the letter can fulfill a task for mankind's benefit. Kamadev alone is capable of this daunting task, for it involves the sure end of the person. Enraged Siva opens his Third Eye, which emits fire, rendering Kamadev into ashes. However, Siva grants him a boon that he would take an incarnation as Pradyumna (Krishna's son) in the Dwapara age. Holi is celebrated to mark this event. The ashes are smeared over the body the next day, and also sprinkled in fields before sowing oeperations, when it rains three months later.

Some legends associate the bonfire to Hiranyakasipu's story. The demon's sister Holika had got a boon that fire shall not devour her. So she offers to take Prahlad (Hiranyakasipu's 'wayward' son --- wayward because Prahlad does defy his father and pray Mahavishnu, who ultimately manifests as Nrsimha or Narasimha) into her lap and sit on a pyre. When Holika sits on wood with Prahlad in lap, demons set it afire. Prahlad is saved by Mahavishnu (Vishnu), but Holika is destroyed and burnt for she was misuing the boon. Some people call the Holi bonfire as Holika.

Spiritually Holi signifies the destruction of evil.

THE FACT ABOUT HOLI:

The original aim of Holi was to have a day on which Hindus could have freedom to violate the rules of Hinduism. The day was associated with mythology to ensure that it was celebrated everywhere on the same day.

Later on the festival became just symbolic. Thus, instead of having a colorful day, we sprinkle colors on others.
