The F6F Hellcat, specifically designed to destroy the A6M Zero.

1 answer

The A6M had the longest range (nearly 2,000 miles), so the Hellcat could run out of gas and crash into the sea if the pilot is inexperienced. That aside, Grumman designed the F6F specifically to kill the A6M Zero. The Hellcat had 6 fiftys and was built like a tank! It had the horse power and speed of an assassin. The Hellcat would kill the A6M, unless the Zero had a good pilot (like Sakai).

This question carries its own answer. Grumman made the Hellcat, along with the Wildcat, Tigercat, Bearcat, Panther, Couger, Tiger, and Tomcat fighters for the US Navy.

There's about 25 "Zero killers" remaining; mostly in museums. The Hellcat was WWII's only airplane specifically designed to destroy the A6M Zero fighter.

The F6F Hellcat is one of the most unique fighter planes of WWII. It was the only fighter SPECIFICALLY designed & built, to hunt down and kill the A6M Zero fighter. In that arena, it was successful; with the highest kill rate of any allied fighter.

In 1942, a fully intact A6M Zero was discovered in Alaska upside down, with it's dead pilot still in the cockpit. The machine was disassembled and transported to San Diego California. The Grumman Aircraft Company studied the machine, analyzed it, found it's strong points and it's weak spots, reassembled it, and had it test flown by US pilots over California (WITH US MARKINGS ON IT).

From that intelligence, the Zero Killer was born; the F6F Hellcat.

Britain received approximately 1,200 Hellcats for their Royal Navy, and used them in Europe, the Med, and Asia. British Hellcats destroyed approximately 50 enemy aircraft during aerial combat, some of those were ME109s and FW190s. It was noted that the Hellcat more than held it's own against German aircraft.

There were many American fighter planes involved in WW2. Some of them were the P-51 Mustang, P-47 Thunderbolt, P-40 Warhawk, P-38 Lightning, all fighters in the USAAF . Others in the US Navy and Marines were F4U Corsair, F4F Wildcat, F6F Hellcat to mention just a few of the better known ones.

Most probably. Gun camera photographs exist showing four engined EMILY sea planes being shot down by USN fighters in WWII. Nearly 200 Japanese EMILY's were constructed during the war, and they flew on until '45. Since most "Corsairs" were flown by USMC pilots from land based airstrips prior to 1945, and most "Wildcats" were replaced by "Hellcats"...that was most likely a "Hellcat" strafing that flying boat.

The Aircraft: The F6F Hellcat is a carrier-based fighter plane used during World War II. It was the most successful aircraft in naval history. The United States Navy and Marine Corps generally come to mind as users of this aircraft, although the Royal Navy and the French Navy were known to use it too. They were produced between 1942 and 1945 and the price back then was around $35,000. It had a 2,000 horsepower engine and there were only 12,275 of them made. The first flight of the Hellcat was on June 26, 1942 and it was retired from service in 1954. It had a power-mass ratio of 0.16 horsepower to the pound and could reach 380 miles per hour, or 610 kilometers per hour. The Hellcat is easily my favorite classic U.S. aircraft.

In Runescape: You can only get a Hellcat or Hellkitten after starting Evil Dave's section of Recipe for Disaster. Any cat except clockwork can be made into a hellcat by selecting "Chase Vermin" in Evil Dave's Mother's basement. Your cat will chase the hellrats and after killing a number of hellrats your cat or kitten should turn into a hellcat. (Usually 7-10) Hellkittens can still grow into Hellcats, who can become overgrown, lazy, or wily just like any other cat on runescape.

It's a better "fighter-bomber", that's why it was still in production into the 1950's and for the Korean War (1950-1953). Can carry more ordnance, probably further. The Corsair was like the Mustang...men liked 'em, and many became racers at the Reno air races in Nevada when the military sold them in the 1950's & '60s.

The F6F Hellcat was a completely different animal. The Hellcat was born and bred to kill the Japanese A6M Zero. The Grumman manufacturing company acquired a fully intact Japanese Zero from the Aleution Islands in 1942 (the pilot had crashed landed and died; the craft was discovered up-side down on a rough airfield). The 'Zeke" (Zero) was disassembled and transported to San Diego California where it was STUDIED; REASSEMBLED; then TEST FLOWN by US pilots. The A6M's weak spots and strong points were analyzed, digested, and then from there the "Zero Killer" was designed. The F6F had the highest kill rate against the Zeke than any other allied fighter during the war.

With the war ending, and the Zeke's shot from the skies, the Hellcat had no purpose to live anymore; it's reason to exist was gone. So it died too.

Most were shot down as target drones; some turned into missiles; and many were tossed overboard from their carriers on their return trips home (operation magic carpet, to make room for men coming home).

m-18 hellcat, 88kmh Technically speaking, the M18 Hellcat was not a tank. It was a self-propelled anti-tank artillery piece, known commonly if somewat incorrectly as a tank destroyer. Whatever its speed, it had armor resistant only to small arms and frags, but nothing more. And for the gun crew there was no armor except for their M1 steel helmets to protect against German shells bursting above them. The M3 Stuart is the fastest tank of World War that I know of, 58 kph. Yes, 30kph slower than above-claimed speed of the Hellcat, but the Stuart was a real tank, whereas the Hellcat was not.
