Hedda Gabler is about a cold, manipulative woman's unhappy marriage and eventual suicide. She's a beautiful woman, former belle-of-the-ball type and daughter of a renowned general; she plays with his pistols when she's bored. (Note that the title of the play is her maiden name, Hedda Gabler, not her married name, Hedda Tesman). She marries down to a second-rate academic because she was out of options, and is openly disdainful of her husband and his family (though he never seems to pick up on it). Hedda's interactions with Thea prove her to be cruel and manipulative (ex. when she makes Eilert think that Thea doesn't trust him and tauntingly brings up the threat she used to terrorize Thea with at school, of burning off her hair). Through her discussions with old flame Eilert Lovborg, we realize that she is drawn to the passionate, wild and beautiful things in life, but though not religious she is bound by the rules of society and terrified of being involved in scandal. She is also pregnant, but denies this because she doesn't want to be a mother. She openly admits to being a coward a heart. Her reasons for destroying Eilert's manuscript aren't clear, but the most obvious are sheer resentment towards Thea and Eilert. Her suicide is caused by a few main factors: 1.) she's disillusioned because Eilert's death was crude and ignoble, not beautiful as she'd hoped; 2.) Judge Brack is basically blackmailing her to have sex with him because he alone knows that Eilert was killed with her pistol (if that got out, everyone would know she was involved with a wild alcoholic and scandal would ensue); 3.) her husband is planning on spending even less time with her now that he's reconstructing Eilert's manuscript. Other implicit factors may include her pregnancy and lack of control over her life. Basically, Hedda Gabler is a woman who was unable to find beauty, courage, or control over her own life, so she cruelly manipulates others and eventually kills herself.
