according to http://www.answers.com/dago, it is an alteration of Spanish name Diego. As a slur, it was originally directed at those of Spanish descent. When and why it was redirected to Italians is anyone's guess.
According to a 2 hour documentary on the Italians in America, many of the 1st immigrants could barely speak the English language. Therefore, many became cheap laborers. Day-Laborers they were refered to. Then, those Day-o's became Dagos! I struggled for years to find that out! I just found out TODAY how they got to be called "guineas"!

The word 'dago' is a derivative of the Spanish name 'Diego', which means 'James'. It was originally coined in the 17th century by British sailors to indicate Spanish or Portuguese people, especially sailors. Despite the hispanic origin of the word, in the 19th century the word 'dago' became more commonly used in the USA as a derogatory term for Italians, due to the large immigration from that country. However, it is still used to indicate Spanish or Portuguese people as well, but rarely the French. The word 'wop' is derived from 'without official papers', which was a comment that was written by US immigration officials in their records, with reference to poorer Italian immigrants who entered the USA without passports or any other means of identification. It then became a derogatory name for Italians or those of Italian origin in general, within the USA. Rarely used in other English speaking countries.

To refer to someone, usually from the Mediterranean area, as a Dago is sometimes used as a slur. Over time, its use has softened and is used by some to refer to themselves. In Portuguese, the word Diego refers to a deckhand and perhaps that is the origin of the word.

actually it"s Dago, and is derogatory ( in Plus Ultra!) Diego is actually a Spanish name, not used by Italians, even in Argentina, which has a large Italian population bloc. There were and are large concentrations of Italian-Americans in California and since San Diego is a major city there, that must be the connection. Explorer Christopher Columbus had a son named Diego, this is , of course when he was operating under the Spanish flag! Some prenames are common to both languages such as Maria and Fernando ( Columbus" male sponsor, King Ferdinand, it always called Fernando Rey ( Fernando, the King!) in Spanish. Fernanda is a female Italian name -one of Gina"s sisters. The connection with San Diego and also the son of Columbus seem to tie-in the odd misniomer of Dago for Italian!

Adopted into the English language in 1823, this is the Anglicized version of Diego, meaning "James". Originally used to describe Spanish or Portuguese sailors on English or American ships, the term was widend by 1900 to include non-sailors, and specifically, Italians. Use of the word to describe a person of Spanish descent is recorded from the 1610s.

While Italian men are known for loving women, I believe that men who cheat are weak-minded and lacking self control and respect for women. This could possibly evolve from family morals and values or lack thereof. Therefore, it is not necessarily the ethnicity of the individual (although some cultures may have a pattern of infidelity) but the morals that the individual has. However, I know a lot of women that are also not faithful, they are just smarter about hiding it.

There are multiple different Native American languages. The Cherokee language is the only Native language to have its own syllabary, created by Chief Sequoyah. The Cherokee syllabary was invented by George Guess/Gist, a.k.a. Chief Sequoyah, of the Cherokee, and was developed between 1809 and 1824. If you wanted to say "Hello." in Cherokee, you would say "Osiyo", pronounced "Oh-see-yo".
