Computer-assisted translation, computer-aided translation or CATis a form of language translation in which a human translator uses computer software to support and facilitate the translation process.
Computer-assisted translation is sometimes called machine-assisted, or machine-aided, translation (not to be confused with machine translation).
1 answer
Computer assisted translation software can sometimes not take in to account the nuances and variances within a language and therefore give quite strange responses. Sometimes translation produced with software is very literal and loses the hidden meaning behind what was intended. With poor translation, the reader or recipient is often left confused and alienated by what they have read.

If you open an English to German translation dictionary, you may look for what an English word means in German, and visa versa. It is the same in computer translating programs. The computer searches through a vast database, and gives up the translation. If the word is not in the database, then the search will fail.

Translation memories are typically used in conjunction with a dedicated (CAT) tool, computer assisted translation word processing program, terminology management system , multilingual dictionary, or even raw machine translation output.
