When both parties work together this is called bipartisanship.

1 answer

Bipartisanship is the cooperation between two competing political parties, or the process of governing in this manner.

1 answer

Because it's not a matter of life or death - it's more than that.

Bipartisanship is easy to find in the US Government. One such example was for both major political parties to vote for the creation of the office of Homeland Security. This was established with little if no opposition after the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center in 2001.

The delegation was all Democrats! He didn't include any prominent Republicans. Thus, he failed to feign bipartisanship and was unable to get Republican support for the treaty when he returned home.

A country's political environment has a big effect on it's society. If the political climate is factious and argumentative, the people in that society will behave in factious and argumentative ways. Similarly, if the political environment stresses fairness and bipartisanship, then people will behave toward each other in a less aggressive manner.

While there have been many accusations of vote fraud, generally there have been few proven cases where the people in charge of elections did not give a true and accurate count.

There have been a small number of cases where election officials were proven to have created votes for one candidate or destroyed votes for one.

H.L. Mencken's quote about both parties being devoted to proving the other cannot lead and leading to both of them being right is political sarcasm. He means that they are too busy wasting energy fighting each other instead of solving the nation's problems working together via bipartisanship. As a result, that makes them both unfit at ruling.

1 answer

Centrist voters typically align with moderate positions that combine elements of both conservative and liberal ideologies. They tend to prioritize pragmatic solutions over ideological purity and seek a balanced approach to governance that aims to accommodate various viewpoints. Centrist voters often value compromise and bipartisanship in political decision-making.

1. Congress can override the President's veto if both houses (the Senate and the House of Representatives) vote to approve the bill by a ⅔ majority. However, this is rarely done.

2. When there are not enough votes to have a majority, then bipartisanship occurs. This is the act of finding common ground through compromise. This can also help override the presidential veto to gain enough votes.

3. The Supreme Court can declare a law unconstitutional.

The most reliable way to get the opinion of experts on any writing topic is to reach out to individuals who have published research or articles in the field, attend conferences or workshops, or seek feedback from academic institutions or professional organizations dedicated to that specific writing topic. Utilizing online platforms like LinkedIn or Quora to connect with experts in that field can also be helpful.

3 answers

The practice is called "logrolling" in which two members of Congress agree to support each other's bills in order to gain mutual benefits and increase their chances of passing legislation. This is often done when members have different policy priorities but can find common ground through reciprocal support.

2 answers

An example of a bipartisan action would entail a situation where members of two parties within a government agree on passing a bill that could become a law. Frequently this might involve a bipartisan agreement that senior citizen health benefit laws should be altered to provide more benefits for seniors. Another example might be that the two parties of a government agree the taxes on gasoline be reduced.

The two-party system in America promotes constitutional principles by providing a structured platform for political debate and representation of diverse viewpoints. It allows for a balance of power and facilitates the functioning of a democratic government. However, it can also thwart constitutional principles by creating a polarized political environment that hinders compromise and bipartisanship, potentially leading to gridlock and inefficiency in governance.

  • Jefferson's vision of a tiny government ultimately failed at the end of the day, but I would say that his greatest contribution to the nation was his general spirit of bipartisanship. Jefferson's particular pet peeve was the idea of "implied powers," or the ability of the government to do anything not mentioned in the Constitution.

I would say that his greatest contribution to the nation was something that was against everything he stood for, the Louisiana Purchase. The Constitution says absolutely nothing about buying land, but Jefferson knew that it was in the best interest of the nation to buy the Louisiana Territory from the French because the Mississippi River was a vital passageway. Jefferson's bipartisanship in this matter is an example that all politicians should learn from, especially in these divisive times.

Yes, he has said he did enjoy it, although at times, he found it frustrating. He came to the US senate hopeful of being able to bring both sides together on issues (which was his reputation in the Illinois state senate). But the Republicans still controlled congress in 2004, and there was often congressional gridlock, and a lack of bipartisanship. Senator Obama had committed himself to a career in politics by that time, and was determined to work with Republicans. Sometimes, he was able to do so, and forged some strong friendships, especially with Senator Chuck Hagel. But at other times, he was unable to make any progress. That said, he has told reporters that he did find being a US senator an amazing opportunity.

1 answer

No, they generally have not. There have been record numbers of filibusters, and the Republicans have even opposed bills and policies they previously supported. Their political strategy seems to be uniting to oppose whatever the president wants, in order to make it impossible for him to govern. Political commentators on both sides (moderate Republicans as well as Democrats) have said this is a very cynical strategy: it does make the president unable to move his agenda forward and thus makes him look ineffective, but it also ties up important bills that could help the American people. Historically, there has always been a certain amount of bipartisanship, which is necessary for a government to function. But this time around, there seems to be a commitment to saying "no" to anything the president proposes.

Carbon taxes are an effective mechanism that work by creating certainty about the future cost of greenhouse emissions. Nevertheless, they are considered a somewhat less effective mechanism than an Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS).

Moreover, carbon taxes could at least partly fail to achieve their objectives if the certainty on which they rely is undermined. This could occur if business leaders are led to believe that future costs of carbon emissions may be lower than intended under the tax regime. To make carbon taxes really work as effectively as they should requires a level of political bipartisanship that transcends short-term political gain by either party. Once a carbon tax is implemented under due political process, it becomes time to stop political haggling and ensure business certainty is not undermined.

Nobody has the job of maintaining union in the US Congress. The US Congress has generally had a culture of desiring unity and bipartisanship, but there is no requirement to pursue this attitude and cordiality and no person duly elected with the purpose of trying to facilitate this kind of relationship between the various Congresspeople.

Conversely, the US Congress does have members called "the Whips" whose job it is to preserve party unity in the face of adversarial policies (from other parties). The Whips in the US are relatively tame in comparison to Whips in other countries, like the United Kingdom, and can really only employ minor sanctions against Congresspeople who abandon their party and "vote with the opposition", part of trying to maintain unity in deeply partisan Congress. In the UK, a Whip can more properly sanction a bipartisan party member up to and including expulsion from the Party.

Yes and no. There are some promises he made which he was able to keep (bringing the troops home from Iraq, for example), while others he was not able to achieve (closing Guantanamo, for example). Mr. Obama's supporters would say he has accomplished a great deal, including rescuing the auto industry and signing health care reform, as well as supervising the mission that killed Osama Bin Laden. (His detractors would disagree, saying he has not turned the economy around or fixed the deficit.)

Meanwhile, there are still some promises Mr. Obama made that he has not kept, including changing the tone in Washington and promoting more bipartisanship; this has not occurred at all. It remains to be seen whether he will be able to do what he said; it should be noted that all presidents make promises while campaigning, but that does not mean the congress will agree with a president's priorities.

It has happened at certain times in the past, but these days, it is very rare. First, to be fair, it's part of politics for one party to denounce the policies of the other party, and this has gone on for several hundred years, with both parties pointing the finger and blaming the other side. That said, there have been times in Washington when there was bipartisanship, or when the leaders of one party tried to work with the leaders of the other. (Ronald Reagan, a staunch Republican, really was good friends with Democratic House Speaker Tip O'Neill.) But sad to say, this has not been the case for the past several decades. As moderates have been driven out of the Republican party, the party has moved farther to the right and has become more ideological (its supporters would say the Republican Party has finally become more faithful to conservative doctrines, which as they see it, is a good thing).

When any party, and in this case you are asking about Republicans, becomes dominated by its most conservative or most ideological members, no compromise is permitted and no support for opposing ideas is given. We saw some of this during the New Deal, when Republicans united to try to stymie President Roosevelt's agenda. But most political scientists have noted that today's Republicans are almost totally unwilling to compromise with Democrats, even on policies the party previously supported. This has made life very difficult for the Republican party's few remaining moderates, who want to compromise on certain things but are being told they should not.

As a member of Congress from 1977-1995, I would periodically read the words of Daniel Webster, inscribed directly above the Speaker's chair, which reminded us that we were there to do something "worthy to be remembered." In our amazing democracy, those words remind elected officials that the prime purpose of their jobs is to do the public business in a way and manner that all of us would be proud of, especially the American people. Even in disagreement in a vibrant democracy, the goal is always to engage the issues in a way that our descendants would be proud, and gets the job done for the people.

But the challenges of the current era sometimes make Webster's admonition difficult to achieve. The pressures on elected officials are enormous, the role of the media is materially different than even 20 years ago, the constant race for campaign funds makes spending time on substantive issues a real chore, the issues themselves are much more complicated, and in the process the public has become more and more disenchanted with the competence of their elected officials, and in some cases with our democracy itself.
