The screw in a Balisong knife is commonly referred to as the pivot screw. It is the central screw that holds the two handles together, allowing them to pivot open and closed smoothly.

Yes. I would recommend putting loctite on the screws and tighten them to where you want it. If they are too loose without loctite they can fall off.

No! They are not. They are classed as an offensive weapon (a flick knife specifically) under the Restriction of Offensive Weapons Act 1959.

Under this act, it is illegal to import, sell or carry a flick knife or a knife that has a blade, hidden within the handle, released either by gravity or mechanical operation (ie: a butterfly, or a Balisong knife.)

Therefore, butterfly knifes are not legal in the UK.

1 answer

It depends. Balisong Knives (Commonly known as Butterfly Knives) often fall under the category of "Gravity Knives" which are illegal. (These are knives opened through Gravity). Thus, you may be able to talk your way out of having your Balisong taken or being arrested for it, but in court, it's likely the judge will find it illegal.

The safest way is to get a trainer which is a blunt Balisong with holes drilled so you can't sharpen it. Also, the most popular company for Balisong's is Benchmade who owns the copyright of Butterfly Knives and produces "The Butterfly Knife". You know what I mean if you ever watch videos. Everyone uses a Benchmade.

It has to do with how long the blade it is and how it opens. Every state is different, but many do not permit you to own a switchblade, or automatic open knife, or gravity (balisong) knives. Fixed blades, unassisted open, and assisted open are fine depending on the length of the blade. You would need to check your local laws to find out details.

The question does not state what "area" is being referred to, However (in the US) most (all?) states ban this type of weapon and it is known by various descriptions (e.g.: gravity knife, balisong, etc).

Knife laws in Kentucky are as follows.

A knife is considered a concealed deadly weapon if it is kept in your pocket or other area where the object is covered.

You may carry a Ordinary pocket knife / hunting knife on your person and in your pocket by law.

Though no law exists defining ordinary pocket knife / hunting knife leading people to be charged anyways.

Balisong's and switchblades are not specifically prohibited by law but are frowned upon.

To carry your knife unconcealed you may carry it in a knife sheath that is on your belt with your shirt not covering it.

You may also carry your knife in your pocket if it is in the box and you have the receipt on you.

Well from my experience I own trainers, so my guess is that do not take it out in public, I got caught once for walking around with a real Butterfly knife, wasn't funny ok. So you can order one but try not to show off or brag about it, your friends could post a pic of you holding it and a officer may stumble upon it, and **** happens, so you can order one, but make sure the company you are ordering from allows it, like where I got my balisong which is Bladeplay.com well they allow shipping practicaly everywhere :)

A butterfly knife, also known as a balisong knife, is a folding pocket knife with two handles that rotate around the blade. The distinctive feature of a butterfly knife is its "butterfly" or "fan" opening mechanism, which allows the knife to be rapidly deployed with a flick of the wrist. The handles of a butterfly knife are connected by a pivot pin, which enables them to swing freely and lock into place when the knife is open or closed.

Butterfly knives typically have a single-edged blade that folds into the handles when not in use. The blade can vary in length and shape, with common blade styles including tanto, clip point, and spear point. The handles of a butterfly knife are often designed with textured grips or patterns to provide a secure hold during use.

Butterfly knives are popular among knife enthusiasts, collectors, and enthusiasts of flipping and manipulation. They are prized for their unique opening mechanism, compact size, and sleek design. However, butterfly knives can be illegal or restricted in some jurisdictions due to safety concerns and their association with potential misuse or harm.

In addition to their use as everyday carry (EDC) knives, butterfly knives are also used in martial arts and as performance props in various forms of entertainment, including movies, television, and video games. The art of flipping and manipulating butterfly knives, known as "balisong flipping," has its own dedicated community of enthusiasts who practice and compete in skill-based events and competitions.

They're not technically illegal, but you cannot import them as the handles are counted as being the same as regular balisong handles, and your trainer WILL be seized by customs on the grounds of it containing illegal weapons parts.

They have been banned in some locales. In others, it is only illegal if you are carrying it concealed, with an intent to harm, or if it is over a certain length. Check with your local police department. You can also get around the law by carrying a balisong trainer that has a bottle opener instead of a blade.

No you can own a balisong in KY as long as you don't intend on using it to harm people.

automatic knives are defined as having a blade which is deployed by simply pressing a button located on the handle of the knife. balisongs, or "butterfly" knives, consist of two handles that rotate around a blade at two pivot points. these knives don't have any sort of deploying mechanism or spring an are completely manual, they are not considered automatic knives. However, in some states, a butterfly knife is considered a switchblade because you can use gravity to open it. An example of such a state is New Jersey.

There seems to be a great deal of confusion on the subject. Many believe it to be no longer than 3" while others are still saying 5-6". The statutes on the laws themselves seem only to touch on it very vaguely, mostly saying about criminal use or intent. Realistically outside of the federal laws in place where you cant take them on school, or federal property, or airlines.. You shouldn't have any problem defending a claim against you for any size knife that isn't a switchblade. Also they cant stop you for a knife if its not of obvious intent that your going to be using it for illegal activity.

I asked a police friend of mine what the laws are for concealed knife carrying in Minnesota and he informed he that 5 inches is the legal limit for a concealed knife.

butterfly knives are legal but they must be under 3.5 inches. Balisong trainers are legal however.

A Schrade knife can be a pocket knife, a hunting knife, a fillet knife, etc. However, a Schrade knife is generally not a bread knife (used for bread). A Schrade knife generally has more special uses.

1 answer

There is no limit regarding length that I am aware of. However, the government does place restrictions on the type of knife. Knives cannot be "assisted openers", like a switchblade and they can't open from centrifugal force or gravity like a Balisong (Butterfly Knife). Canadian law is kind of murky when it comes to knives, it is also mentioned that knives cannot be concealed on a person (although I seriously doubt the RCMP are going to arrest you for having a Swiss Army Knife in your pocket when your camping).

2nd Poster:

When i took my FAC course we were briefly schooled on knife safety and knife laws. In Alberta, at least, i believe you are allowed to carry a flip knife 4 inches or less. Anything over that requires a belted sheath. Like OP said, you cannot have switch blades, stilettos or balisongs. a fixed blade knife HAS to be sheathed and HAS to be exposed. I myself live in a relatively small town (3,000 people or so) and i usually carry a smaller version of a K-BAR (Belted and exposed of course) and i have received no flak for it. although with knife laws in Canada, you just have to use common sense

-dont bring them into stores

-if you have to carry it at night, try not to look shady as balls

1 answer

Yes but the blade must be under 4" if any longer than that it is a violation of MO law to carry if it is over 4" it is illegal to carry but you can keep it at home. You can also go around the law by getting a balisong trainer--a balisong without the blade. It is legal almost everywhere. You can even get a model that is a bottle opener.
