1 Samuel 5:1 After the Philistines had captured the ark of God, they took it from Ebenezer to Ashdod. 2 Then they carried the ark into Dagon's temple and set it beside Dagon. 3 When the people of Ashdod rose early the next day, there was Dagon, fallen on his face on the ground before the ark of the LORD! They took Dagon and put him back in his place. 4 But the following morning when they rose, there was Dagon, fallen on his face on the ground before the ark of the LORD! His head and hands had been broken off and were lying on the threshold; only his body remained.

A:There is a well known story that Abraham perceived that his father's idols had no power, so he smashed all but one of them to the floor to prove his point. This story is not from the Bible, but is a Jewish midrash from the Common Era. It's called "guilding the lily" when the story we have is not good enough so we embellish it beyond recognition. Bruce Feiler (Abraham) says that probably less than one per cent of the stories told about Abraham appear in the Bible, with an explosion of detail beginning to appear in Jewish tradition from the third century BCE onwards. Answer:1 Samuel 5:1-5 - Then the Philistines took the ark of God and brought it from Ebenezer to Ashdod. When the Philistines took the ark of God, they brought it into the temple of Dagon and set it by Dagon. And when the people of Ashdod arose early in the morning, there was Dagon, fallen on its face to the earth before the ark of the Lord. So they took Dagon and set it in its place again. And when they arose early the next morning, there was Dagon, fallen on its face to the ground before the ark of the Lord. The head of Dagon and both the palms of its hands were broken off on the threshold; only Dagon's torso was left of it. Therefore neither the priests of Dagon nor any who come into Dagon's house tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod to this day. [NKJV]

Since Israel fought with them, and King David killed Goliath, I would say that they were barbaric. They probably believed and worshiped in many gods, being polytheistic.

Answer

According to the Bible, the Philistines worshiped the god Dagon (among many other deities, including Baal), as seen by the following passage:

1 Samuel 5:2-7 (King James Version)

2When the Philistines took the ark of God, they brought it into the house of Dagon, and set it by Dagon.

3And when they of Ashdod arose early on the morrow, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the earth before the ark of the LORD. And they took Dagon, and set him in his place again.

4And when they arose early on the morrow morning, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the ground before the ark of the LORD; and the head of Dagon and both the palms of his hands were cut off upon the threshold; only the stump of Dagon was left to him.

5Therefore neither the priests of Dagon, nor any that come into Dagon's house, tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod unto this day.

6But the hand of the LORD was heavy upon them of Ashdod, and he destroyed them, and smote them with emerods, even Ashdod and the coasts thereof.

7And when the men of Ashdod saw that it was so, they said, The ark of the God of Israel shall not abide with us: for his hand is sore upon us, and upon Dagon our god.

Apparently they worshiped Ashtaroth and Baal-zebub (known as the 'god of Ekron - a Philistine city) as mentioned in the verses below.

However, no archaeological evidence whatsoever has been found to support this account of a Dagon-centric Philistine religion. This is not to say that there is no evidence for Dagon at all -- the deity is attested from Mesopotamia to Ugarit in Syria -- but there is no evidence for Dagon's place in the Philistine pantheon. Rather, the archaeological evidence for Philistine deities during Iron Age I (the biblical period) consists of small figurines of female deities and lion-shaped libation jugs -- nothing that would hint at a male supreme deity.

It was Isaiah, found in below scriptures...

"In the year that Tartan came to Ashdod, when Sargon the king of Assyria sent him, and he fought against Ashdod and took it, at the same time the LORD spoke by Isaiah the son of Amoz, saying, 'Go, and remove the sackcloth from your body, and take your sandals off your feet.' And he did so, walking naked and barefoot.

"Then the LORD said, 'Just as My servant Isaiah has walked naked and barefoot three years for a sign and a wonder against Egypt and Ethiopia, so shall the king of Assyria lead away the Egyptians as prisoners and the Ethiopians as captives, young and old, naked and barefoot, with their buttocks uncovered, to the shame of Egypt. Then they shall be afraid and ashamed of Ethiopia their expectation and Egypt their glory. And the inhabitant of this territory will say in that day, 'Surely such is our expectation, wherever we flee for help to be delivered from the king of Assyria; and how shall we escape?' ' " (Isaiah 20:1-6)

Toward sunset on an evening when the light is extremelyclear, you can recognize the Mediterranean Sea and 2 towers of Ashdod (about 60 km to the west) from a look-out panoramic place known colloquially in Hebrew as "Ha-Psanter" ("The Piano"). This spot, on the edge of the Aminadav Forest on the southwestern outskirts of Jerusalem, is built in the shape of the keys of a piano and is a memorial tribute to the pianist Arthur (Artur) Rubinstein.

It depends on how this is meant. The Philistines made repeated incursions into territory held by the Ancient Israelites and were repulsed by a number of Israelite monarchs. The Bible argues that King David was among the most successful of these. However, the Philistines never completely left the southwest Levant (simply becoming Roman citizens) and some current Israeli cities, like Ashqelon and Ashdod, are built on former Philistine territory.

In biblical times, books were kept as short as possible, so that they could fit onto one scroll of papyrus. The trip from Gaza, where Acts says that Philip baptised the eunuch, to Azotus (Ashdod) was unimportant and hardly worth recounting, but the author of Luke and Acts was good at miracles. As soon as Philip had baptised the eunuch, he disappeared and reappeared in Azotus, by the Spirit of the Lord (Acts 8:39-40).
