Looking for something completely different? Those willing to brave the city’s lesser-known neighborhoods and ethnic enclaves will find some unusual boutiques and excellent deals. Rue des Taillandiers, Rue de Charonne and Rue Keller (11th, M° Ledru-Rollin) are full of punk and skate shops, DJ record stores and funky vintage-clothing boutiques. Rue Oberkampf and Rue J.P. Timbaud (11th, M° Parmentier) are full of edgy young designers, discount shops, and typical Parisian butchers, bakeries and bistros. Toward Rue de Ménilmontant and all along Boulevard de Belleville (11th/20th, M° Ménilmontant) are North African bazaars and French Caribbean food markets. Rue de Belleville (19th/20th, M° Belleville) is lined with Chinese gift shops and grocery stores. Venture in to the African clothing boutiques, Moroccan music shops and Algerian delis around métro Barbès-Rochechouart (18th), including Rue Dejean and Rue de la Goutte d’Or.
SHOPPING MALLS There are actually quite a few indoor shopping malls in Paris, but most of them are small, outdated and full of identical chain stores. They may be convenient for Parisians, but visitors can find much nicer places to spend their limited time (and euros). |
