Albrecht II (1397-1439, Neszmély, Hungary), son of Duke Albrecht IV of Austria, succeeded to the dukedom in 1404 as Albrecht V and was elected German King (see Deutscher König) in 1438 in succession to Sigismund. He succeeded Sigismund also as ruler in Bohemia and Hungary. The advance of the Turks into south-eastern Europe drew Albrecht to the defence of southern Hungary. While waiting for reinforcements after the loss of Semendria to the Turks, he fell ill of a fever and died on the return journey to Vienna after a reign as German King of just over a year. With him the house of Habsburg returned after 132 years to the imperial throne.
