A city of south-central Germany on the Main River. Originally a Celtic settlement, it is an industrial city in a winemaking region. Population: 135,000.
[VUHRTS-behrk] University city that is the capital of Germany's franken region and the site of many of the old cellars of the region's finest wine-producing estates. Among the best cellars are the Staatlicher Hofkeller, which is the Bavarian State Domain; the Juliusspital, the local church charity; and Bürgerspital, a city-run charitable institution. The vineyards on the city's outskirts along the Main River are planted primarily with müller-thurgau riesling and sylvaner. Stein is the most famous vineyard (einzellage) in Würzburg (and Franken). Its 210 acres cover the best sections, which have an ideal southern exposure and look down on Würzburg. Wines from the Franken region are sometimes called Steinwein, in reference to this famous vineyard.
