Servius (Marius Servius Honorātus), Latin grammarian and commentator of the early fifth century AD, whose greatest work was a commentary on Virgil. Since it was intended for school use it dwells mostly upon grammatical, rhetorical, and stylistic points, but some notes on the subject-matter are included which contain very valuable information. The commentary is found in the manuscripts in a shorter (the original Servian) and a longer version, the latter known as Servius auctus (‘augmented Servius’) or Servius Danielis (named after its discoverer, P. Daniel, and published in 1600), incorporating much earlier material.
