  (rō-zär'ē-ō', -sär'-) pronunciation

A city of east-central Argentina on the Paraná River northwest of Buenos Aires. It grew rapidly as a port after 1870. Population: 908,000.

 

 
 

City (metro. area pop., 1999 est.: 1,000,000) and river port, east-central Argentina, on the Paraná River. Founded in 1725, it began to develop into a major city in the late 19th century. In 1819 the city was burned by revolutionaries. In 1860 it welcomed domestic and foreign oceangoing ships to its natural harbour, which became a major port. One of Argentina's largest cities, it exports grain, meat, and lumber. It is also an industrial city, producing steel, automobiles, and agricultural machinery, and it is an educational centre.

Rosario (née Florencia Pérez Podilla;b Seville, 11 Nov. 1918). Spanish dancer. She studied with Realito and made her debut with her cousin Antonio in 1928. They became the most renowned Spanish dance partnership of their generation and toured all around the world. She danced briefly with Iglesias (1953-4) and performed again with Antonio during his 1964 seasons in London and New York. She also assembled various ensembles of her own with which she performed and for which she created several works including Capriccio espagnol (mus. Rimsky-Korsakov) and Café de Burrero (Andalusian folk music).

 
(rôsär') , city (1991 pop. 1,095,906), Santa Fe prov., E central Argentina, a port on the Paraná River, on the eastern margin of the Pampa. The third largest city of Argentina, it is primarily the import and export center for the central and northern provinces. Steel, cars, and farm machinery are the principal manufactures. It also exports grains, beef, and wood products. Rosario is the terminus of several railroads and has excellent port facilities. It was settled in the late 17th cent. but grew mainly after 1870 with the rapid development of the Pampa. It has a small airport.
