The Catholic Encyclopedia gives credit to Pope Julius I as the official designation of December 25th for the birth of Christ. This happened in 336 AD. Constantine had recognized that date before, but Julius I made it official. The chosen date was to coincide with the birth date of Mythras, the Roman sun god as a way of drawing the pagan religion away from their false god.
