"Feudal Japan" is period of Japanese history (12th - 19th century), where the country was ruled by powerful regional families (daimyo) or warlords (shogun). While there was an Emperor, he was only kept as a figurehead.

Feudalism has existed in most parts of the world at one time or another. It features a set of reciprocal legal and military obligations among the warrior nobility. Lodsand their vassals owed obligations to each other. The peasants and the land they lived on were esemtially the property of the lords.

In Japan the feusal periods were:

  • The Kamakura period 1185 to 1333,
  • The Muromachi period 1336 to 1573.
  • The Azuchi-Momoyama period 1568 to 1600.
  • Edo Period 1603 - 1868
