After a case is argued and the Court's decision rendered, all the case files, including briefs, must be kept on hand for at least 25 days, in case one of the parties petitions for a rehearing.

Digital copies of certain court records are stored and accessible on PACER (Public Access to Court Electronic Records). Many relevant files are stored digitally by the federal government, but not all are available to the public.

The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), an independent agency that preserves and provides access to documents and materials created by the three branches of the federal government maintains certain items, and is in the process of digitizing over 10 billion pages of material. The project slated for completion in 2016.

Paper records are also housed in at least one mail-handling and storage facility, the "Supreme Court Warehouse," which is located at a remote and undisclosed location in Prince George's County, Maryland.
