Scabies is an itchy skin condition caused by an infestation by the itch mite Sarcoptes scabiei. Transmission of the mites involves close person to person contact of the skin to skin. Scabies are hard to catch
Mites. Scabies is a mite that burrows into your skin, lays eggs, then burrows back out, leaving the tell-tale hole and red line mark. It is also known as the worst itch known to medical science. They are gotten rid of by a cream applied topically to your skin from your neck to your feet overnight, then washed off in the morning. It is easily transmittable from person to person, but they don't live on surfaces long---8 hours or less. They are not gotten from being "dirty" but directly transmitted from another person.
They are more than annoying, and can cause many very stressful itchy welts if the infestation is bad, but apart from that it appears at present that they are not a vector for any disease.
