They joined to be releived of their financial debt, and because of British pressure to join the Confederation instead of becoming it's own nation, because the British feared an independent Newfoundland might seek union with the U.S to escape aforementioned debt.

The colony decided to enter Confederation for these reasons:

Many of the settlers thought that the powerful United States would want to expand northward into New Brunswick. However, if they were part of Canada they would be better able to defend against this threat.

People thought that Confederation would help the economy by providing a larger market for their goods, and a link to the other colonies through the Intercolonial Railway.

Another answer is:

Fraud and Coercion. New Brunswick did not want to join Confederation and petitioned Queen Victoria to save them. She did not.

The people of New Brunswick voted against Confederation in 1865. In 1866 they voted for Pro-Confederation representatives under the agreement that they would get better terms. They did not. The promise of 1/3 of cabinet posts for the Maritime provinces as well as an equal elected senate never made it to the BNA act.

They joined because the elite found it to be profitable to them at the time.

When it comes to Canadian history it is rare for there to be one right answer even though this is the one recently presented to the Supreme Court of Canada it is not the only answer.

Britain saw their North American possessions as liabilities. They cost more money than they produced and put Britain into conflict with the increasingly powerful United States.
