The Japanese (see Japanese Buddhism) version of the Mahāyāna (see Mahāyāna Buddhism) Bodhisattva (see Bodhisattva) Man̄juśrī, Monju sits on a lion and holds a book and a sword. The book symbolizes his position as a source of wisdom and the sword refers to his war against those who oppose wisdom, or Enlightenment.
