According to the Bible, Adam was the first human being on Earth and the father of all humanity. In the book of Genesis (1:26), Adam is created by God on the sixth day of creation, in God's own image, and given dominion over all the animals of the world. God then gives Adam a female partner, Eve. Eve feeds Adam fruit from the forbidden Tree of Knowledge, after which an angry God expels them from the Garden of Eden. In Christian theology, Adam's failure to obey God is known as the Original Sin. Adam fathered three sons by Eve: Cain, Abel and Seth.

In Hebrew legend, Adam had an earlier wife named Lilith, who argued with Adam, disappeared, and was replaced by Eve... The fruit of the Tree of Knowledge often is depicted as an apple, but that is not explicitly stated in the Bible... In cartoons and other drawings, Adam and Eve are usually shown wearing fig leaves; Genesis 3:7 states that Adam and Eve "sewed fig leaves together and made loincloths for themselves"... Adam is the subject of a famous palindrome: "Madam, I'm Adam" (or "Madam, in Eden, I'm Adam").

Adam, bishop of Caithness 1213–22. Adam became a Cistercian monk when a young man and was later abbot of Melrose. William, king of Scotland, appointed him as bishop in a remote area where his own power was weak and that of the Norse earls strong. Adam attempted to enforce law and order, including canon law, and the payment of tithes. The customary offering of a span of butter for twenty cows was increased by Adam to one for fifteen, then one of twelve, and finally one for ten. The people revolted, forced an entry into the bishop's house at Halkirke, and burnt him and his followers to death. His body, although ‘roasted with fire and livid with bruises, was found entire under a heap of stones and buried honourably in the church’. An unofficial cult grew up. Feast: 15 September.

(ăd'əm) , [Heb.,=man], in the Bible, the first man. In the Book of Genesis, God creates humankind in his image as a species of male and female, giving them dominion over other life. Elsewhere in Genesis, however, Adam is the personal name of the first man for whom the created order is then fashioned. From his body, Eve is made to be his helper and partner. After the Fall, i.e., their disobedience, they are expelled from the Garden of Eden. The Qur'an depicts Adam's creation and fall. Higher criticism regards chapters 1–4 of Genesis as the re-workings of Babylonian and Canaanite myths concerning creation. While the myths stress human servitude to the gods, Genesis places humankind at the center of the created order, over which it exercises dominion as God's agent.
